rPlus Hydro is a leader in the development of new pumped storage hydro capacity in the United States. We currently have more than 12 projects in various stages of development, ranging in size from 450 to 1000 MW, with a combined capacity exceeding more than 9,000 MW. The majority of these projects are in the western US. Our intention and our business design is to take projects from concept through execution.

 OUR STORY

rPlus Hydro was established in 2019 out of a partnership between rPlus Energies and Gridflex Energy. Since its founding in 2009, Gridflex had established itself as a leading originator of new pumped storage in the US market. Gridflex combined an obsessive focus on finding the best sites in the right markets with a depth of knowledge about pumped storage that could only be achieved through a relentless search for market-driven solutions. rPlus Energies brought experienced leadership in renewable energy development and a vision for a multi-technology platform that includes wind, solar, and energy storage.

Success in pumped storage hydro development in the US market requires a rare combination of knowledge, skills, and experience. It requires an understanding of the utility industry, its past and its future, and knowledge of pumped storage technology and engineering. Technical imagination is needed to create optimized solutions, and disciplined development is needed to turn concept into reality. Realization of any project requires strong working relationships with key industry players along with deep, combined experience in the realities of all of the business, environmental, political, and human aspects of the enterprise. rPlus Hydro is this rare combination.

rPlus Hydro's pumped storage projects complement electrochemical batteries. In fact, rPlus Energies—parent company of rPlus Hydro—specializes in constructing solar arrays coupled with battery-based storage systems.

Batteries are well-suited for short durations (typically 2-4 hours), whereas pumped storage typically offers storage durations of 8 hours or longer.
